Today's Gospel: Mark 3:13-19

“Jesus went up the mountain and summoned those whom He wanted and they came to him.”

Mark’s Gospel begins with the baptism of Jesus. By the third chapter Jesus has already called several followers, healed multiple people, and been challenged by the religious authorities. Then in the middle of Mark’s third chapter, which we hear today, Jesus went away from the crowds (Mark 3:7) and up the mountain with His closest followers. He then appointed the chosen select twelve men whom He wanted to become His apostles.

In other Gospel accounts, Jesus prayed all night alone on that mountain in order to be assured from His Father which men He should declare as His apostles. Mark doesn’t include this detail, but he makes it very clear that Jesus was precise and assured of summoning "those whom He wanted” and inferring they were also the ones His Father wanted Him to choose.

I imagine the twelve men selected were excited, honored and yet a little uncertain what it would entail. If they knew their Torah, they knew the significance of the number twelve, especially because of the twelve tribes of Israel that God had established and promised to redeem with the new kingdom brought by the Messiah. They already had proven themselves worthy of Jesus calling them to follow Him as students of His teachings and sensed this was a special, powerful prophet, even if they didn’t understand Jesus was the Messiah.

God created and chooses each of us to be His followers. He wants us to be His hands and feet, listening ears, and consoling shoulders for others to cry on. We each have a mission God has assigned us that He wants to help us accomplish for Him. He is summoning each of us and wants us as His own. Feel His love and acceptance and thank Him for choosing you!

Ponder:

Have you answered God’s call and discerned His mission for you?

Pray:

Dear God, thank You for choosing me to be Your follower. Please fill me with Your wisdom, courage, compassion, and love to be worthy of Your summons and serve those around me.
