Today's Gospel: Luke 6:36-38

Jesus teaches in the Our Father that our sins will be forgiven “as we forgive those who trespass against us.” In today’s Gospel, He takes that a step further and says that this reciprocal treatment is expected not just in being forgiving, but also in being merciful, judgmental, condemning, generous, and loving with sincere depth.

We are all sinners who “fall short of the glory of God.” It is so difficult to be holy and Christ-like all of the time. Jesus is telling us that we need to try our best to treat others with the same kindness we want to receive. We don’t deserve mercy or blessings if we are withholding giving them to others first.

It can be easier to spot the sins others around us are committing, but God wants us to focus on our own sinfulness and try to limit ours before expecting improvement from others. God loves all of His children equally and wants us to see others through His eyes of love. He wants us to clean our hearts and fill them with goodness.

The first step of St. Ignatius’ Spiritual Exercises is to be aware of yourself ~ strengths, weaknesses, goodness, sinfulness, virtues, and vices. We can’t be better Christians if we are unwilling to reflect on our areas to improve.

“Treat others the way you want to be treated” isn’t just a lesson for our kids. Let's live by it ourselves and be a good example.

Ponder:

Who is God calling me to forgive, stop condemning, or judging so I am worthy of His forgiveness?

Pray:

My Dear Jesus, thank You for Your loving goodness and mercy. Help me see my own weaknesses so I can love others as You would have me.
