Today's Gospel: Mark 4:21-25
In the verses leading up to today’s Gospel, Jesus has been speaking in parables, explaining to the Apostles that not all will understand His messages. However, in the first reading, Saint Paul references this parable as he reminds Timothy to stir into flame the gift given to you.
When Jesus comes to us and we open our hearts, He sets them on fire. Our hearts burn for Christ with the flame of love and faith that shines through our actions, becoming a light to others. Today, Jesus points out that we don’t light a lamp only to hide the blaze shining from it. It is made to be elevated on a lampstand where it burns brightly, revealing anything hidden in the shadowy dark. So too, our faith burns within us illuminating Christ’s love in truth.
Take care not to neglect your burning heart. If we do not feed it and the fire smolders into burning embers, we must stir our gifts into the flame once again, with the fuel it needs. Build up your light through prayer and good works. Show love to others, serve your community, and spend time with Jesus through the Scriptures, in Mass, or resting in Adoration.
Ponder:
How does your faith for Christ shine? In what ways can your life illuminate the way for others?
Pray:
Come Holy Spirit, stir into flame the gift given to us. Let our lives be a beacon of light for others to know Christ’s love.
