Join us as we reflect, ponder, and pray together inspired by today's Gospel.

Today's Gospel: Luke 24:46-53

Today’s Ascension Gospel is a powerful reminder of all we are given and all we are called to do. Before He ascends into heaven, Jesus leaves His followers with three great gifts.

  • He calls them witnesses to all His teachings and good works.
  • He does not leave them alone; by sending the promise of the Father, He is with them until the end of the age.
  • He blesses them.

Meanwhile, in return, the apostles in the Gospel model for us how all of us are to live beyond the Ascension.

  • They did him homage.
  • They returned to the city of his crucifixion with great joy.
  • They continually praised God.

We, too, are disciples, chosen by God to faithfully follow His teachings, trust in His promise, and love one another. From our baptism and acceptance into the Church, we also receive Christ’s gifts before the Ascension. The promised Advocate impels us beyond our fear and lack of understanding to be witnesses to the Good News. Through the Holy Spirit, we are empowered and sustained for our mission on earth. We are not left alone and we are blessed.

As we are present at the Last Supper and Crucifixion in the celebration of Mass, we are also expected to take part in the Ascension. Our actions as followers and disciples of Christ should also follow the examples from today’s Gospel. To give glory to God in respect and worship. To go out into this troubled world and spread the Good News with great joy. And to continually praise God in our prayers and our works.

 

Ponder:

As you read the Gospel passage, imagine yourself present at the Ascension. Be open to the opportunity to be a witness with great joy, giving homage and praising God.

Lord, we bless You and we adore You. We thank You for all Your promises, for being with us always.
