Today's Gospel: Mark 4:26-34

If we read Jesus’ parable of the farmer who scatters seed with practical eyes, we might find ourselves giggling. The farmer throws some seeds around and when it grows, he is puzzled at how it happened. He doesn’t do anything but spread the seed, and—boom!—the land yields fruit of its own accord.

Now, unless he is a magical farmer, this is not how farming or gardening goes. Farmers pay immense attention to their soil, the seed, and conditions. Farmers know when to plant, when to water, and how to care for their crops.

The farmer in this parable doesn’t seem to have a clue.

What does this parable point us to?

“This is how it is with the Kingdom of God . . . Of its own accord the land yields fruit.”

The Kingdom of God is fertile. It is grace. It is life.

If we, like the silly farmer, scatter seeds of prayer, faith, and service—inadequate and imperfect as they are—God will tend to them and make them spring with life.

Ponder:

When have you been humbled by both your need for God and God’s response of abundant love?

Pray:

God, You know our imperfections and limitations and love us still. Use us for Your Kingdom; we know all things are possible for You.
