Today's Gospel: Matthew 5:20-26

What do we think faithfulness looks like?

The audience for whom this Gospel was written thought faithfulness looked like the scribes and Pharisees. We can almost imagine the look Jesus’ disciples gave Him when He told them—a group of everyday sinful people—that their righteousness had to surpass that of the scribes and Pharisees. They wore clothes for working, not robes of Pharisees. They were educated by their parents and other tradespeople, not in elite schools.

But Jesus is never one to lead us into despair. He provides a new way—one that is paved in stones of freedom, mercy, and hope. Jesus delves deeper with His disciples on what true faithfulness looks like. Jesus tells us it’s not as easy as exteriors alone. True faithfulness involves a reconciling of the whole person to God. In it, we take an honest account of the state of our hearts and our relationships with others. Through the Holy Spirit, we can open our lives to God, and God will make us truly faithful by His grace.

Ponder:

What images come to mind when you hear the words righteous and faithful? Which aspects of those images are true and which need reconsideration?

Pray:

Come, Holy Spirit, make us truly faithful so that we might know, love, and serve God on earth and be happy with God forever in heaven.
