Today's Gospel: Mark 4:26-34

Have you ever looked at a mustard seed? I remember that my 3rd grade CCD teacher wore one, encased in glass, in a dainty necklace around her neck. I liked to look at that tiny seed and marvel at what Jesus tells us about the power of faith in today’s Gospel. When it is sown, “it springs up and becomes the largest of plants and puts forth large branches, so that the birds of the sky can dwell in its shade” (Mark 4:32).

My sister recently quoted this passage to me when I was feeling overwhelmed by the demands of my growing-up kids and the new and challenging ways they sometimes need me as their mom. There are no more scraped knees and diaper rashes here. In their place are bigger worries as my kids find their way in the world, sometimes making mistakes and learning some hard lessons along the way.

My sister reminded me of the grace that God gives us, especially in the sacrament of marriage. In marriage, we say yes. It feels like such a nice and easy yes in the beginning, when you make plans for a wedding and begin a beautiful life together. It’s a small yes, like a mustard seed. But God can take that mustard seed of faith, love, and good will and grow it into such a large plant that birds of the sky can dwell in its shade. Our families are meant to be that kind of blessing to our kids and the world at large.

On days where I don’t feel up to the task, I take great comfort in knowing what God can do with a mustard seed. I can bring whatever small bit of faith I have, sow it with God, and see what miracles He will grow with it.

Ponder:

In what ways is God calling me to sow a mustard seed with Him today?

Pray:

Dear Lord, help me to grow in trust. I want to give You my life, my hopes, and my dreams. I know that You can take my meager efforts and my small plans, and work miracles with them. Help me to be open to Your plan.
