Today's Gospel: John 17:20-26

Today’s Gospel feels a little bit like eavesdropping. We get to listen in while Jesus prays to Our Heavenly Father on our behalf, asking God to bless us all with unity and love.

“Father, the world also does not know you,” Jesus prays. This was true about the world when Jesus lived, and it is true about the world today. We don’t have to look much beyond the latest news, interactions on social media, or even division in our own communities and families to know that the world does not know God.

But despite this, Jesus prays fervently for the world and especially for unity between us and Him. The more closely we follow Jesus, the more we can grow in relationship with Him, and the more we can be united to one another in love.

I love that the Gospel shares the details of Jesus’ prayer in this way. So many times in the Gospels, we read that Jesus goes away to pray. He wakes up before the others do, He retreats to lonely places, and He prays. He does this not so much for His own sake, as He was always united to the Father, but for our sake. His actions teach us the value of prayer and the importance of “going away to pray” and to be united to the Father.

We live in a world of busy-ness and distraction. The world does not know God, and so the world will always pull us away. It’s easy to get so caught up in the details of work, school, home and family life, that we forget to take time to pray. We must be deliberate about following Jesus’ example and spending time in quiet prayer, uniting ourselves to the Father and growing in unity and love with Him and with one another.

Ponder:

In what ways is God calling you to grow in unity and love through greater devotion to prayer?

Pray:

Lord, the world is so full of busy-ness and distraction! Help me to see where you wait for me, beneath the noise and commotion of my days, and give me grace to respond to your invitation to grow closer to you through prayer.
