Reflection by Connie Beckman

Today's Gospel: Mark 3:31-35

When I first read this passage, I wondered why Jesus did not immediately get up and go see His mother and His other relatives who were waiting to see Him.

“Your mother and your brothers and your sisters are outside asking for you.”

Was Jesus ignoring his precious Mother Mary and His relatives? Was Jesus being rude and indifferent toward them? At first, it seems so. However, let us dive into what else Jesus said.

“For whoever does the will of God is my brother and sister and mother.”

Our Blessed Mother Mary always did the will of God perfectly and likely Jesus' relatives were striving to do the will of God too. Jesus adored His Mother and after her earthly life was over, He assumed her body and soul into heaven to be with Him forever.

In striving as best we can, with the help of His grace, to do the will of God, we enter into His family. We come to know, love, and serve Him on this earth so that we can be with Him forever in paradise.

Saint Thomas Aquinas, whose feast day we celebrate today, said some simple but profound words about loving our brothers and sisters that are worth pondering: “To love is to will the good of the other.”

Ponder:

How can I become more attuned to God's will in my life?

Pray:

My Jesus, help me to put You first in my life. Help me to surrender my will to Yours, knowing You will provide for all my needs and resolve all my difficulties.
