Reflections on Jesus' parables about the Kingdom of God and how parents can nurture faith in their children through living and demonstrating their beliefs daily.

Today's Gospel: Mark 4:26-34

Jesus tells us two parables about the Kingdom of God, and both refer to seeds and fruits. Those of us who live in cities may have difficulty understanding the natural cycle of plants and crops. We are so used to going to the supermarket and getting the food off of a shelf that we forgot all that was involved in its making its way to us. Once, I heard a little boy telling his friend that milk comes from a box, not from a cow.

Jesus wants to remind us that the Kingdom of God can mean God's ruling our hearts and souls as King. It is a transformation we cannot see, but for which we will receive the fruits. Our job is to scatter the seed; the rest is up to God. We need to be patient. God's work is often invisible, but He is always working, transforming our hearts, enabling them to love more and better.

Acknowledging this is very important to us as parents because many times we get anxious when we don't see the fruits of the education we give our children. Our job is to scatter the seed, and that means more than talking about our faith. We should struggle to live our faith and give testimony about how beautiful and meaningful a Catholic life is. Our children must see us praying, going to confession, receiving the Eucharistic, and how all of that shapes our relationships, the way we work, and the way we react to everything that happens.

Ponder:

How can I improve my prayer life and show my children how I relate to God?

Pray:

Dear Lord, increase my faith in Your divine providence, especially in the education of my children. May I scatter the seed of faith in their hearts and have confidence it will bear fruit.

Pray Together:

Plant some beans or sunflower seeds in wet cotton balls inside a plastic cup. As you watch them grow, talk about how God is taking care of that small seed and how He takes care of each one of us with great love.
