Today's Gospel: Mark 6:14-2
Herod knew that John was both right and special (righteous and holy). There was no reason to jail him, much less put him to death for telling the truth and being a good man, but still Herod kept him under lock and key to keep him from spreading too much of the truth to the people in his district. Also, to appease his wife, Herodias.
It is only human nature to try to hide something that is hard to deal with. Putting your head in the sand, as they say, does not make it go away, and many times it will come back to haunt you. John the Baptist was a reminder of the sinful life that Herod and Herodias had chosen. Herodias was waiting for Herod to finally get rid of John, and when the chance came, she jumped at it. Herodias must have been a strict mother for her daughter to both come to her for advice and agree to such a gruesome suggestion. I do not know about you, but I would ask for my own camel or wing of the palace!
In life, there are always going to be questions, suggestions, and the decision of whom we listen to. Our conscience, guided by the Holy Spirit, will always be there, and the answers we receive will not be to another’s detriment. We will know the answers if we stay close to the Word of God and the sacraments. We will know the answers so long as we continue to keep a prayerful relationship with Jesus and our Holy Mother. We will know that our decisions align with God’s will as long as we remain faithful to our Father’s commandments and open to His whispered guidance.
Ponder:
Listening is hard at best, but with little ones tugging at our every nerve some days, how can we hear what God is telling us? What works best for you?
Pray:
Holy Spirit, lead me in prayer for the answers I need today, so that I may serve my family as the best version of myself today and every day. In Jesus' name I pray.
