Reflect on the apostles' experience with Jesus, His boundless love, and how He serves as the Good Shepherd in our lives today.

Today's Gospel: Mark 6:30-34

Did you ever wonder what it was like to be one of Jesus’ apostles?

It must have been incredible to have been able to speak face-to-face with the Lord. I am actually a bit skeptical that I could have done it. When faced with the Savior of the universe, I might have wanted to run and hide. In my miserable, sinful state, how could I possibly converse with the Messiah?

Well, God apparently knew what He was doing, planting me on earth so many years after His birth. He was also quite cognizant of the role the apostles would play in the evangelization of the world. Imagine the apostles huddled together, informing Jesus of the actions they had taken and the teachings they had proclaimed. It must have been stellar stuff indeed!

But Jesus is not an “all-work” kind of guy. He realized that His followers needed their rest. So He invited them to come away to a private spot and relax. The apostles appear to be only too glad to take Him up on the offer. They board a boat and off they sail to their destination.

However, that alone time was short-lived. When Jesus goes to leave the boat, He’s confronted by a vast crowd. Now, He could have shooed them away like a celebrity ducking the paparazzi. But instead, His heart is greatly moved by these human beings. He realizes that they would be lost without Him. As a result, He resumes the role of teacher for minds craving the truth.

Jesus's love for us really knows no bounds. He is willing to empty Himself, take up His cross, and give of Himself completely for our sakes. We do, in fact, worship an awesome God! For today, let’s be happy in that knowledge.

Ponder:

How do I see Jesus serving as the Good Shepherd in my life?

Pray:

Jesus, You are the Good Shepherd, leading me to safety. Help me to recognize Your guidance in my life.

Pray Together:

As a family, discuss what you have done for Jesus this week.
