Today's Gospel: Mark 8:1-10

When I was a little girl and my father was unemployed, my mother struggled to put food on the table. And yet, it seemed that she could take just a few ingredients and prepare a delicious breakfast for my younger sister and me. While money may have been sparse, love was overflowing in our household.

I am reminded of my mother’s philosophy of “doing a lot with just a little” as I read the words of Mark. Like my mother, Jesus faced a hungry crowd with little to feed them. But He was moved with compassion for those who came to hear Him speak. He recognized that, without food, they might collapse on their way home.

So Jesus proceeded to do the impossible—taking seven loaves and just a few fish and feeding a crowd of four thousand. Imagine that—thousands of people fed and satisfied through a miracle of the Lord.

This is just one of the many miracles which confirmed Jesus’ status as the Son of God. He was not just a prophet or a really compassionate guy—He was and is the long-awaited Savior. But there was even more to this miracle than the feeding of a massive throng of people.

For, in this miracle, Jesus foreshadows the miracle of miracles—the offering of His own Body and Blood so that masses of people could be spiritually fed. The Eucharist, according to the Catholic catechism, is the source and summit of our lives. By receiving Christ’s Body and Blood, we enter into a divine communion with Him.

The next time you receive Holy Communion, consider contemplating the miracle of the loaves and the fishes. If Jesus can feed thousands with just a handful of food, there is no telling what miracles He can work in your life.

Ponder:

Is there a miracle in your life that you can attribute to the boundless love of God?

Pray:

Lord, to you, a little means a lot. Help me to take the gifts that You have given me and help me to work miracles for Your kingdom.
