Today's Gospel: Mark 8:1-10

Keeping our children fed is perhaps the most primal parental responsibility. Jesus had pity on the crowd and explicitly said so.

“My heart is moved with pity for the crowd, because they have been with me now for three days and have nothing to eat. If I send them away hungry to their homes, they will collapse on the way, and some of them have come a great distance.” Mark 8:2-4

They had been with Him for three days! Why had they stayed so long, knowing that they did not have enough food for the journey? My guess is they were so drawn to the words of Jesus, so drawn to the person He was, that they could not pull themselves away. They could feel His authority, recognize His truth. Some probably even could sense that He was God. They felt compelled to hear as much of His wisdom as they could.

Imagine what it would have been like to be in the presence of Jesus on earth, to hear His voice, to see His eyes, and to be immersed in His love. It’s no wonder they had stayed for three days. They probably never wanted to leave.

God knew they needed to eat. He also knew what would happen if they did not. God is the perfect father. He always knows our needs. Seven loaves was all the bread they had, along with a few fish. We recognize the familiar Eucharistic words that come next. He gave thanks, broke the bread ,and gave it to His disciples.

Four thousand people ate and were satisfied. Seven baskets were leftover. God so often gives us even more than what we need. Today He continues to feed us in the breaking of the bread. Blessed be God.

Ponder:

God, our perfect Father, always gives us what we need. How can we respond to His desire to satisfy us always with the Bread of Life?

Pray:

Oh Lord, thank You for tenderly caring for all our needs. Please help us to receive from You all that You want to give us, all that You know we need. Thank You for Your love.
