Today's Gospel: Mark 7:31-37

When Jesus heals the deaf man in today’s Gospel, He takes him “off by himself away from the crowd.” This man did not approach Jesus on his own, but rather was brought to the Lord by “people,” how many we don’t know. And still, Jesus chooses to be alone with this man in order to work a miracle for him. Why?

The intimacy strikes me, perhaps because I am rarely alone. Much of my prayer—in the morning, in the evening, at Mass, at meals—is with some number of my five children. My family shares a home with my husband’s parents. I am blessed with a community of faithful moms who help me reflect on my life and my faith. There’s always someone around, and the fullness of this stage of life is a gift I regularly thank God for.

But today’s Gospel reminds me that sometimes Jesus needs to be one on one with me to do the work He desires to do. To heal. To redeem. To rejuvenate and revive. To make it so that I can hear and speak the glory of God again.

It’s up to me to not allow the noise of the world or the fullness of this season of my life to detract from my alone time with the Lord. That could mean spending time in Adoration by myself, saying a prayer before someone needs me in the morning, or finding that interior space to listen to the Lord, even with a full minivan.

Over the last year or so, my husband and I have been reminding our children how much the Lord delights when we come to him in prayer. It’s in this time with him that He can transform us into who we were created to be.

Ponder:

How can I make time to be alone with Jesus today?

Pray:

Lord, thank You for the gift of my life. Help me to be a good steward of the time You’ve given me, for Your glory.
