Today's Gospel: Mark 8:11-13

Jesus sighed. In fact, today’s Gospel tells us that Jesus sighed from the depth of His spirit. “Why does this generation seek a sign?” He asks.

My study bible has a note that references a passage from the Book of Numbers in the Old Testament: “The Lord said to Moses: ‘How long will this people spurn me? How long will they not trust me, despite all the signs I have performed among them?” (Numbers 14:11)

Indeed, how long will we not trust? Today’s Gospel passage immediately follows the Feeding of the Four Thousand (Mark 8: 1-10). Now that was an incredible sign. But for some, it was still not enough. The Lord also provided so many signs for his people in the wilderness, proving His faithfulness through mighty deeds. But for some, it was still not enough.

It made Jesus sigh.

That is something I can relate to, at least a little bit, as a mom. How many times during the day do I sigh at the hundredth request of me or the constant “why," or someone complaining about not getting what they wanted.

Do I make Jesus sigh? Do I lack faith and demand signs, asking Him to prove that He is Almighty, and that He loves me?

I don’t want to make Jesus sigh. I want to notice all the mighty deeds He is working in my life and respond with gratitude and faith.

Ponder:

What is one way that I see Jesus at work in my life?

Pray:

Jesus, I want to believe in You, I want to trust You. Help me to believe in You and to trust You.
