Today's Gospel: Matthew 5:43-48

It starts out innocently enough. You post an opinion on Facebook, thinking that most of the world would have to agree. After all, it seems obvious that the referees at that football game made a mistake or that that new television show you’ve been streaming is the best or that restaurant you recently visited is the worst.

Then a Facebook friend claps back. How dare you question the referees? What are you thinking, watching that show? Don’t you know my daughter works at that restaurant? And then, before you know it, you are involved in a Facebook free-for-all. You trade barbs back and forth. You even call your mother for advice on how to respond to the social media miscreant.

You have made an enemy—and it is a Facebook friend.

Jesus knows the sting of betrayal. After all, it happened to Him when one of His friends sold Him for thirty pieces of silver. He has felt that particular pain that occurs when we find we suddenly have an enemy.

His response is challenging and counter-intuitive. He commands us to love those who seem to hate us. He wants us to pray for our persecutors. He preaches mercy, not vengeance.

This does not mean that we excuse bad behavior or accept terrible treatment. Jesus does not want us to be doormats. But He does want us to respond to people with loving kindness—even when those people are driving us bonkers.

Before you engage in another social media spat, pray for the one who hurt you. Offer a little sacrifice for that individual’s well-being. Maybe it means refraining from unleashing a harsh word or saying no to that extra cookie. It’s really the best way to achieve peace of mind and heart.

Ponder:

Is there an enemy in my life that could benefit from my prayers today?

Pray:

Dearest Jesus, transform my heart of stone to a heart of love. Help me to feel compassion toward those who oppose me.
