Reflect on the importance of reconciliation and forgiveness in our relationships, as emphasized in today's Gospel reflection by Carolyn Astfalk. Discover insights for harmonious family life.

Today's Gospel: Matthew 5:20-26

Jesus sets the bar high for His followers. The low bar condemns killing; the high bar condemns lesser offenses that nonetheless destroy our relationship with others. We are the Body of Christ, and our relationships with one another matter. We can't be right with God if we are harboring anger or hatred toward our brother.

Family life is rife with opportunities for sins and offenses against one another. Tempers flare, angry words fly, and grudges are held. Rather than let those slights and offenses fester, Jesus reminds us to reconcile. We must humble ourselves, offering and receiving forgiveness as necessary to maintain harmony.

Jesus's reminder that we will be held accountable "to the last penny" prepares the listener for the words of the Our Father, seeking forgiveness for our transgressions "as we forgive those who trespass against us."

Ponder:

How many times have we uttered the words of the Our Father, and how few times have we taken those words to heart?

Pray:

Lord, help me to be mindful of the importance of restoring my relationships with others, including those closet to me, as a precondition for coming to You.

Pray Together:

Spend a few minutes reflecting on how you've hurt or offended one another, make amends, then mindfully pray the Our Father together.
