Reflect on the challenges of embracing Jesus' teachings and maintaining faith amidst life's chaos. Learn how a busy family can stay spiritually connected.
Today's Gospel: Luke 4:24-30
Jesus laments that the people He grew up with reject His teachings. They even try to throw him off a cliff! Why were they so afraid to hear the Gospel? Did His teachings show them how sinful they were? Did He make them think about how they were living their lives? Were they reluctant to change their sinful ways?
Jesus emphasizes in His sermons that it is necessary to embrace the cross. "Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me." (Matthew 16:24)
Many did not want to hear this. They had an earthly kingdom in mind, in which the Messiah would destroy the Romans and God's chosen people would rule. They did not like this message of sacrifice.
How many roadblocks must we overcome in order to grow spiritually? How do we lead our children onto the right path? I remember a time when our lives became chaotic with work, the kids' sports, and never-ending household chores. I regret that our faith was put on hold during those years when we needed it most. How I wish we'd done things differently and made more time for God.
"Pray without ceasing," St. Paul says, for good reason. (1 Thessalonians 5:17) He knows that we need His graces to get through this life whole. Never let your faith get away from you because you're too busy. Even five minutes a day can keep your family connected to the Gospel of Our Lord.
Ponder:
Does hearing the Gospel make you squirm in your seat? Why?
Pray:
Lord, please help me to embrace suffering in in Your name and may I be empathetic to others in pain.
Pray Together:
Give up something you like, even if it's not Lent, to remind you often of Christ's sacrifice.
