Discover the importance of the Holy Spirit in guiding us toward salvation, as reflected in today's Gospel. Embrace His presence in your life.

Today's Gospel: John 16:12-15

I've always wondered about the many times in Scripture that the apostles didn't seem to grasp what Jesus was telling them. As witnesses to the Transfiguration, Peter, James, and John still thought Christ's kingdom would be on earth. They were ready to build tents where Jesus, Elijah, and Moses could dwell.

What Jesus is telling us in this reading is how much we need the Holy Spirit, who will "declare to you the things that are coming." He sent the Holy Spirit to give us wisdom, understanding, counsel, fortitude, knowledge, piety, and fear of God.

It was years before I even thought about the third person of the Holy Trinity. I don't know why. When I realized how much the Holy Spirit wants to help us, I leaned on Him more and more. Jesus didn't ascend into Heaven without sending us the Paraclete (advocate) to guide us.

Stop and think about all the ways Our Lord tries to ensure our salvation through the Mass, the Sacraments, our priests and nuns, prayer, novenas, and most especially, the Holy Spirit. Come, Holy Spirit. Enlighten and strengthen us.

Ponder:

Do I realize when the Holy Spirit is speaking to me?

Pray:

Lord, please help me to acknowledge the Holy Spirit as my friend and guide.

Pray Together:

Spend an hour in Adoration and listen.
