Today's Gospel: John 8:51-59

To some who read today’s Gospel, it might seem like Jesus is being difficult. He answers their questions, and they are not satisfied. They think He is trying to be funny. But He is being serious. He is greater than Abraham and the prophets. He has seen Abraham. Jesus will defeat death, and by rising from the dead He will not die forever. He has knowledge that they do not have.

What do the people decide they want to do with Jesus? They decide they want to pick up stones and throw them at Him. Jesus seems to get to people that they want to drive Him out of town or hurt Him. On a different occasion the people chased Him out of town.

This Gospel could stir up lots of emotions for a reader. When have I had similar reactions? It would be quite easy to answer this question regarding our relationship with other people. But there could be a spiritual question and answer there. When have I wanted Jesus to leave me? The answer is probably when I have become complacent. I don’t want Jesus to confront me. Instead, I just want to sit in my misery. There are times when we push Jesus away.

When do I want to throw stones at people? These stones can be metaphorical. Sometimes a stone might be throwing harsh words at another person. It probably happens when we are annoyed or overwhelmed. In those moments when we become irritable or impatient and want to throw stones, try repeating the name of Jesus and drawing close to Him, in order to obtain peace of mind, heart, and soul.

Ponder:

Who has been a recipient of my proverbial stone throwing?

Pray:

Jesus, forgive me for the times I have been impatient with others. Help me to understand Your will and ways.

People wanted to throw stones at Jesus. Throwing stones at others can be easy to do. We need to examine why we want to throw them and ask God to change our hearts and minds. #DailyGospel
