Today's Gospel: John 7:1-2, 10, 25-30

“His hour had not yet come.”

In my earlier years, I used to read the Gospels, and wonder why the Jews kept missing their chance to arrest Jesus. Certainly, there were many times when He was obviously visible and seemingly available. There are still other places in the Gospel where we learn that Jesus was actively avoiding arrest. Why? He knew He had come to die . . . right?

Many years ago, I asked a Catholic theologian why the Incarnation of Christ occurred when it did. It seemed to me that God might have waited for a time when there were more people, or the advent of the printing press—so that the Word of God could spread more efficiently. My friend smiled and said, “Because it was in the ‘fullness of time.’” That is to say, that the events of human history had ebbed and flowed to reveal the perfect entry point for the Savior of the world.

God is a God of order. His ways are flawless; everything has been timed for His perfect entrance . . . and His perfect exit. The death of Jesus was not subject to the actions of mortals. It was subject only to the will of the Father. The arrest and death of Jesus were dependent only on the will of God and the willingness of His Son.

This knowledge should fill us with peace. Our God is in control of everything: from the creation of the universe, to the mysteries of faith, to the ordinary events of our lives. Everything has been perfectly orchestrated. We just need to cooperate with His perfection.

Ponder:

When and where have I witnessed the perfect will of God in my own life?

Pray:

Father in heaven, help me to cooperate with Your perfect will instead of my own human inclinations.
