Today's Gospel: John 12:1-11

Remembering that this story took place the day before Palm Sunday helps us find many ways Jesus was pointing His closest friends to what was on the horizon. We can see that because we know the rest of the story, but they didn’t. After reading and praying with this Gospel several times, Mary emerged bigger and more powerfully each time I read it. The way she lovingly took part in this story left me with the “Mary 3 Gs” for loving and honoring Jesus.

Mary was GENEROUS. She didn’t care how much the oil cost; she simply gave her most costly, precious treasure to Jesus out of love and devotion. She wasn’t making an investment expecting a return. Her act was an emptying - jar busted and completely drained, all in a gift to Jesus. We are that treasure in the eyes of Jesus. He wants all of us, broken, spilled out and freely given to Him, the One who adores and treasures us infinitely.

Mary was GENTLE. There was no towel soft enough and no object more personal than her own hair, so she offered the most tender gift. In Paul’s letter to the Corinthians, he speaks about a woman's long hair being her crowning glory. Mary surrendered her glory to serve and honor the One worthy of all glory.

Mary loved with GUTS. She had not a thought about what others would say or think. The opinion of others didn't matter because her only focus was finding the most intimate and personal way to show her love for Jesus. Even though Judas scolded and criticized, she kept on loving Jesus. There was no rebuttal, no conflict, no shirking away or justification, just generous, gentle, pure-hearted love.

Thank you, Mary, for your example of genuine love.

Ponder:

Ask Jesus to reveal those places and relationships in your life where He’s calling you to be more generous, gentle, and gutsy.

Pray:

Sweet, loving Jesus, please help me offer the gift You desire most from me -- my whole heart and the premier spot of most treasured love in my life.
