Today's Gospel: John 11:1-45

In our Gospel this week, we get a small yet powerful glimpse of Jesus’ heart:

“So the sisters sent word to him saying, ‘Master, the one you love is ill.’”

Lazarus died. Jesus told His disciples and Martha that He was going to awaken him. And Jesus wept.

In today’s Preface, the opening of the Eucharistic Prayer, we hear, “For as true man he wept for Lazarus his friend and as eternal God raised him from the tomb, just as, taking pity on the human race, he leads us by sacred mysteries to new life.”

Jesus took pity on the human race. It’s easy to make that a simple all-inclusive statement, but he took pity on Lazarus, on his sisters, on me, and on you. The thought of being a creature so in need of God’s pity that Jesus would weep, is a very humbling thought. This scripture also gives us a very important look at the compassion in the heart of Jesus. What will Jesus do for those he loves?

I have prayed the prayer that the sisters of Lazarus prayed. I’ve prayed it for others, I have prayed it for myself, “Master, the one You love is ill.”

Master, the one You love is hurting. The one You love is lonely. Add this simple seven-word prayer to your list.

Let the compassionate heart of Jesus lead you, and those that the Master loves, into His care by way of the sacred mysteries. These mysteries, these truths that are revealed by God, don’t just bring life, they bring life everlasting.

Ponder:

Think about those two words: “Jesus wept.” It is possible that Jesus has wept not only for you but with you. Is there any greater way to accept the humbleness of who we are than to imagine Jesus weeping with or for us? Is there any more glorious way to honor His compassion than to meet Him in the sacred mysteries, the sacraments?

Pray:

Look upon us, O Lord. The ones that You love are hurting. The ones that You love are ill. The ones that You love need strength. In Your pity, please hear us.
