Reflection by Fr. Edward Looney
Today's Gospel: Mark 12:28-34
As a podcaster, I have had conversations with lots of people. I’ve interviewed actors, actresses, producers, authors, singers, entrepreneurs, and ordinary people. I remember my first interview with Roma Downey. She was the most famous person I had interviewed, and I was really nervous. With each interview, I go in with set questions I know I want to ask and allow the conversation to guide the rest. Think of a famous person whom you would like to speak with sometime. If you could sit down with that person, what would you ask them?
The unnamed scribe in our Gospel today had an opportunity to ask the savior of the world a question. Word of Jesus had spread around, and he had heard His teaching. He was searching for clarity. When the right moment came, he asked, “Which is the first of all the commandments?” Jesus answers his question and gives him a bonus answer. The first is to love the Lord our God with all your mind, heart, and soul, and the second is similar--to love your neighbor. The answer to this question has been repeated so often and is seen as a summary of the Ten Commandments. Jesus’ answer is a reminder of how we ought to live our lives and what we should do.
If you could ask Jesus any question, what would it be? A lot of people might ask a question that seeks clarity and answers one of the most troublesome questions people face: Why do bad things happen to good people? Or why do children get cancer or die? The great thing is we can ask the Lord questions at any time, especially during our prayer before the Blessed Sacrament. Don’t be afraid to ask, and don’t forget to listen for His answer.
Ponder:
If Jesus was standing before you or alongside you, what would you ask Him?
Pray:
Jesus, I want to know You, love You, and serve You. Give me wisdom that I might know You better and understand Your will.
