Today's Gospel: John 8:31-42

How often do we hear the phrase, “the truth will set you free,” in the context of setting straight someone who disagrees or is missing some facts? This isn’t just an idiomatic expression; the words come straight from the Lord’s mouth!

Today's Gospel reveals Jesus as liberator. He has come to set us free from the bondage of sin. As we’ve seen often with the Pharisees, the Jews in this scene challenge the Lord’s words, taking them literally to mean that Jews are in a state of enslavement.

Poised in the Truth, Jesus engages the Jews. He wants them to hear Him, to understand the root of what He is saying. Jesus doesn't just explain the meaning of this attachment to sin that holds us in its grip, He establishes Himself as Son of the Father, and speaks from that authority.

It is not enough that we know Jesus as the liberator of the bonds in which sin imprisons us; He is more. Redeemer. Savior. The Son of God. Sent by God. Jesus establishes the fidelity of this relationship with the Jews, telling them that if they know this truth and hold to His teachings, they will be free from the bondage of sin.

Jesus offers them an invitation steeped in truth: “[God] sent me.” Understanding this truth, we would do well to listen to His commandments and follow Him.

Ponder:

Jesus wants to set us free. Do we believe Him and follow Him?

Pray:

Dear Lord, release me from my attachment to sin. Free me from this bondage that I may truly follow You.
