Today's Gospel: John 4:43-54

I have been a mother for 25 years, and I can say with assurance that the letting-go part of motherhood has been the most challenging for me. During the early years, when you provide for your child’s every need, there is comfort in knowing you have done everything possible to ensure your child’s health and safety. Yes, it can be exhausting, but there is a sense of security when you, the parent, are in charge. In those later years, when we have to let go and let God do His work in their lives, our faith can be greatly tested.

In today’s Gospel, a royal official comes to Galilee to ask Jesus to heal his son who is near death. When Jesus says, “You may go; your son will live,” the man believes Jesus and goes on his way. When the official returns home and hears that the fever left his son at the time Jesus spoke to him, he and his household came to believe. What a great example of faith in action!

How many times have I prayed for my children and trusted them to God? Literally thousands. When they were teen-agers and made their first long trips without me for Scouting or mission trips. When they were struggling with some of life’s unpleasant firsts, such as that first heartbreak. But really, it is in the every day that those prayers seem to matter most. As a mother of two twenty-somethings, I have seen my children wander away from their faith practice and then return.  Daily prayer for our children is literally practicing our faith. As we practice our faith, it grows.  A great sense of peace comes with knowing God is in charge.

Ponder:

How have I seen God work in the lives of my children or family members?

Pray:

Dear Lord, let me always lift up my children to you knowing that your love for them is greater and stronger than my own. May my faith in You continue to grow.
