Today's Gospel: Mark 4:21-25

I am an early riser because I usually write or run before work. I have a lot of experience quietly moving around the dark bedroom to retrieve the items I will need for that morning in order not to awaken my husband. Without light, it is easy to accidentally walk into a chair or knock a book off the desk. How much better it is to navigate in the light, whether it is in our homes or in our own lives.

The parable of the lamp reminds me of how blessed we are as Christians to live in the light of Christ. who has so clearly showed us His way of love, mercy, and sacrifice. We don’t have to wander in the dark as we try to find our way through life’s challenges. As Christians, we also are called to be light in the world. We are not to hide our Christian love and beliefs from the rest of society. Our light may be just what someone needs to see their way through a difficult situation.
It can be challenging to be light in a world devoted to darkness, but that is our call. To be light, we need connection with that source of light, much like the wick submerged in the oil of an old-fashioned lamp. Without that fuel, the light goes out. To protect and enrich our faith, we must “take care” about what we expose our hearts and minds to.

Beginning each day with Scripture and prayer is one important way to keep our faith infused with the light of Christ. As a mother, I have found that waking early to carve out that time with God is vital for me to carry His light into the day.

Ponder:

How do allow myself to be distracted from the light of Christ?

Pray:

Lord, help me to be a light in the world that reflects Your love and mercy. May I stay firmly connected to Your love, the source of all grace.
