Today's Gospel: Matthew 26:14-25

The betrayal of Jesus by Judas. It is such a sad passage to read. One of the chosen, one of Jesus´s closest friends, who lived with him for about three years, who saw all the good Jesus was doing, all the miracles, and still decided to betray the Lord. Judas was the first disciple to turn his back to Jesus and all the love Jesus showed him.

The saddest part of the story is not the betrayal itself, since Peter, later that night, also betrayed Jesus, denying Him three times. The saddest part is Judas's lack of trust in Jesus’s mercy. When he realized what he had done, that because of his kiss Jesus was going to die, he committed another sin: despair. He didn´t believe Jesus was able to forgive him, so he hanged himself. Even living with Jesus all those years, he didn´t realize Jesus was Love, and being Love, He has infinite mercy.

Ponder:

Do I trust in Jesus’ mercy? Do I search for His forgiveness in the sacrament of Reconciliation when I sin?

Pray:

Dear Lord, help me always trust in Your Divine Mercy and grant me the grace of contrition whenever I sin. Jesus, I trust in Thee!
