Today's Gospel: John 8:31-42

Today Jesus reminds us that if we remain in His word and are truly His disciples, then the truth sets us free. We are no longer slaves to sin.

If we truly reflect, though our sins may look different, we are all slaves to sin. Each of us has something that we struggle with. We even convince ourselves that it is not a big deal, or it isn’t as big of a sin as something else. But, it is sin and sin separates us from God.

Personally, I have always found it easy to gossip and complain. How quickly I can find myself sucked in. I have had to rearrange my routines at times to avoid situations where I fall into this trap.

One way that I know the Holy Spirit is with me is I am aware of this sin now. For the majority of my life it didn’t bother me. I enjoyed listening to gossip and reading gossip magazines. But as I fell into the Word of God, read my Bible, and grew in my prayer life, I saw it as a sin. I saw the hold it had on me. I knew I had to make a change. I no longer buy those magazines or read those articles. There are certain people I have learned to avoid. It still creeps in at times, but the good news is, it is less and less frequent. I catch myself now. I see growth. I know that I am remaining in His word as He tells us to. Becoming a true disciple, with my heart and my head focused on God.

Ponder:

What sin has a hold on you? What steps can you take to break that hold?

Pray:

Dear Heavenly Father, please help us to discover the sin that is separating us from You and give us ways to overcome that sin and draw closer to You.
