Reflect on finding Christ’s presence in the storms of family life, inspired by Jesus calming the sea in Luke 6:16-21. Learn how faith can guide you through challenges.

Today's Gospel: Luke 6:16-21

Jesus taught His disciples in many ways. He had moments of verbal teaching, proclaiming the Kingdom of God and what it means to follow Him. He expressed Himself with parables and their explanations, teaching in a very direct way.

Jesus also taught through His actions, like this passage about Him walking on water. As the disciples rowed across the sea, we hear that “it had already grown dark.” We recognize this simple statement as a profound lack of light in their hearts at the moment. The storm picks up, and they become afraid.

As soon as Jesus wasn’t physically present with His disciples, they fell into fear. He comes to them, walking on water, not only to manifest His divinity in His ability to not sink, but to calm the storm that was brewing in their hearts. Yet as He came, they didn’t even recognize Him.

Our lives are full of moments of uncertainty on the sea. Conflict arises in our homes. We do our best to protect our kids and raise them in the faith, but that journey is never without storms. We deal with tantrums, disobedience, and disrespect. Our kids fight us when we implement limits and consequences, and in a moment’s time, our peaceful home can become a great squall.

In these moments, our instinctual reaction is to respond like the disciples. We let fear control our thoughts, words, and actions. We can become overwhelmed and not able to see through the storm.

Jesus is always with us, especially in those difficult moments. We have the choice to recognize Him. When we look, we will see that in and through Christ, the storm will pass.

Ponder:

When my family is in a stressful moment, can I find Christ with us? Where can I look for Him during our next struggle?

Pray:

Lord Jesus, the storms of life can be overwhelming, especially when they involve my kids. Help me to always recognize Your presence and lean on You to safely get us through.

Pray Together:

Put an image or item in your family room that will remind you of Jesus’s presence in the storms of life (a small boat, a picture of Jesus calming the storm, etc.).
