Today's Gospel: John 3:31-36

Today's Gospel is brief but contains a powerful truth:

“Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life.”

Taken with no context before it, this Gospel tells us all we need to know - that Jesus was sent from heaven for us, and to believe this is our eternal salvation.

Reading the beginning of Chapter 3 gives us a glimpse into the precursor to this revelation. Jesus has a conversation with Nicodemus, the leader of the Pharisees. Nicodemus acknowledges that Jesus is sent from God because of the wondrous deeds he has seen. They speak of earthly things and heavenly things, and in the course of their conversation, Jesus tells Nicodemus that he must be reborn in the Spirit to enter the kingdom of God.

Nicodemus cannot wrap his mind around this declaration, and Jesus observes that if Nicodemus has trouble accepting earthly teachings, how can he accept that which comes from heaven,

"For God so loved the world that he gave his only son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life.”

Nicodemus struggles understanding this, and to some degree, he represents us all in trying to see with our eyes when the Spirit is right there.

“Whoever does accept his testimony certifies that God is trustworthy.”

Ponder:

Read all of John 3; it's brief. Ponder how often we put stock in earthly things rather than what is from God.

Pray:

Lord, I believe. Help my unbelief.
