Discover how to find strength in faith amidst life's challenges with reflections on Scripture and practical tips for grounding yourself and your family.

Today's Gospel: John 14:1-12

As I have grown older, I have accumulated the psychological trauma that comes with being exposed to different historical events, global, national, and local, past and present. Media love to surround us with images of violence, whether in the first seconds of scrolling through social media or turning on the local news. It is easy to fall into a pit of despair when the details of so many harrowing events are easily accessible at one's fingertips. Anxiety levels are likely at an all-time high, with this being the most common mental health disorder according to the World Health Organization.

The importance of being able to ground oneself cannot be overstated, particularly as a parent. I have to set an example of being calm and collected for my children. I have tried to teach this to my children, particularly at night when we listen to positive affirmations and reflections from Catholic prayer apps or readings from other resources, such as our storybook Bible.

For myself, I like to reflect on various Bible verses in times of trouble, such as:
  • Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff comfort me. (Psalm 23:4)
  • I am fearfully and wonderfully made. (Psalm 139:14)
  • I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. (Philippians 4:13)

Ponder:

How can I center my hopes on you, O Lord, rather than the troubles of the world?

Pray:

Jesus, help me to remember Your word in times of distress. You have overcome the darkness and sorrows we have all faced. You are victorious. My Savior and my Lord!

Pray Together:

There are many Bible verses on finding strength rather than being anxious. Work with your family members to identify and memorize different ones throughout the week.
