Today's Gospel: John 6:60-69

Today's Gospel starts with a complaint:

“This saying is hard; who can accept it?” (John 6:60).

Jesus had just given one of His speeches about the Eucharist, telling them that He was the “bread of life,” that was too difficult for the people to understand. He had thousands of followers by then because of all the miracles he was making, including the multiplication of the loaves. But after this speech, he was almost left alone. Then, He asks the Apostles if they also want to leave. Peter makes his profession of faith:

“Master, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. We have come to believe and are convinced that you are the Holy One of God.” (John 6:68-69)

This same question is made to us every time we face a difficulty with the teachings of the Church or with the attitudes of some Catholics or even from the clergy.

“Do you also want to leave?” (John 6:67)

We can be tempted to go. Disappointment is a very difficult feeling to deal with, but we must find the strength to answer as our first pope, that we believe Jesus is our Savior, that He is alive and really present in the Eucharist and the only place we can find His body, blood, soul and divinity is in the Catholic Church.

Ponder:

How can I increase my trust in the Catholic Church?

Pray:

Dear St. Joseph, patron of the Universal Church, defend her from all her enemies and help me be a faithful member of the Bride of Christ.
