Today's Gospel: John 16:5-11

In a few days we will celebrate the great Feast of Pentecost, ending the Easter period in our liturgical year. Today's Gospel is a preparation for that great feast. Jesus told his Apostles that He would be returning to the Father, so they all grew sad. Then Jesus explained to them that it would be a good thing that He would go, as He would be sending the Advocate.

The Advocate is the Holy Spirit, the third person of the Holy Trinity. He is the personification of Love, and as we learn from today's passage, He opens the mind of the world so people can be convicted about sin, about righteousness and about condemnation. Jesus is telling us that is the Holy Spirit Who can convict, Who can open the hearts and minds, and Who can show the Truth that will lead us to salvation.

It is so wonderful that the Holy Spirit is called the Advocate. He is the one who can advocate in our favor, who can defend us in the ordeals of our lives, who can teach us how to love, so one day we can stand in front of the rightful judge and tell Him how much we loved and were loved. The other person that is referred to as advocate is Holy Mary. She is the spouse of the Holy Spirit, since the conception of Jesus; she is full of His gifts and fruits and can intercede in our behalf and can advocate in our favor, so we can also receive His gifts and fruits.

Ponder:

How is my relationship with the Holy Spirit? Do I ask for the gifts and fruits He can give me?

Pray:

Holy Spirit, guide my thoughts and actions so I can learn how to love and always do what will give joy to the Father. Mother Mary, help me be faithful to the inspirations the Holy Spirit gives me.
