Explore the comforting message of Jesus in John 15:26-6:4a, as He promises the Holy Spirit's guidance amidst adversity and reflects on the strength of the Trinity.
Today's Gospel: John 15:26-6:4a
In today’s passage, Jesus reassures the apostles that He will send help when He is gone. Recall what the apostles have been through at this point. Their Messiah was mocked, beaten, and crucified, lay in the tomb for three days as they reflected on their lives, and then rose from the dead and lived among them once again. It’s been just over a month and now He is telling them He is leaving again, but sending an advocate. Their minds must have been swirling.
The Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit are three persons in one true God. Each of the three persons is fully God and distinct from the other. The Father is not the Son or the Holy Spirit; the Son is not the Father or the Holy Spirit; the Holy Spirit is not the Father or the Son. All three, even though we are only “meeting” the Holy Spirit here, have existed together as one God for eternity.
A family is stronger with one another, and a strong family reflects the Trinity: three (or more) persons in one (family). With the strong bond of love between the members of a family, or the persons of the Trinity, much adversity can be overcome.
Here, Jesus reminds His followers that the adversity is coming, but He also reminds them of the strength they will find in the love of the Holy Spirit, the strength and love of one true God.
Ponder:
No analogy of the Trinity is ever perfect, but can you imagine the Trinity as a family? The love of two persons begets the third person, and the three are in some ways inseparable.
Pray:
Heavenly Father, You sent Your Son to save us, and Your Spirit to breathe into our lives. Help us to recognize each person of the Trinity as we move through our day.
Pray Together:
Look for evidence of the Father (as creator), the Son (the Word), and the Spirit (the giver of life) as you reflect on the events of your day.
