Today's Gospel: John 14:1-6
“Do not let your hearts be troubled.”
“I am going to prepare a place for you.”
“I will come back again and take you to myself.”
In today’s Gospel reading, Jesus speaks words of comfort to the disciples gathered with Him in the Upper Room. He knows that His time on earth is drawing to a close and that He will soon enter into His Passion. He can see that His little band of followers is distraught and uneasy. Judas has already left to arrange Jesus’ arrest. The end is coming.
Jesus, like everyone else who lives in Roman-occupied Jerusalem, is well aware of the brutal and violent treatment of those who are arrested and condemned. He knows the cross, with its suffering and humiliation, is coming. He knows He will be abandoned, that even Peter will desert Him.
Yet, in spite of this, Jesus focuses on comforting the disciples. What great love for them, and by extension, for us, He shows! In these last few moments they have together, He makes sure they know that He is thinking of them and that what He will undergo shortly is proof of His deep, unwavering love.
After His resurrection, during the joyous Easter season, His disciples remember His words and that He said,
“I am the way and the truth and the life.”
His words remind them that no matter how dark and difficult things may get, they can trust Jesus and His promises, and most of all, rely on His great love for them, a love powerful enough to destroy even death.
Ponder:
Do I believe in God's great love for me, personally?
Pray:
Jesus, help me believe in Your love for me, and help me to respond to it in the way that You desire. Help me to go with You as the Way, understand You as the Truth, and live in You as the life.
