Today's Gospel: Matthew 5:13-16

In today’s Gospel, Jesus compares His disciples to the ordinary, everyday objects of salt and lamps. He says salt must be used for flavoring and lamps have to be set on a lampstand to give "light to all in the house.”

Salt has to become part of the food that nourishes us and gives us the satisfaction of a good meal and a full stomach. It’s got to be worked into the food. It can’t simply stay on the shelf, put away, if it’s to be used properly and make a difference.

In the same way, lamps have to illuminate. They have to be burned up, giving light and hope to those who sit in the dark. What need is there for an unlit lamp in the dark? A lamp is only of use if it shares its light and gives comfort to those around it.

Jesus says we are that salt and we are that light. If we are to be His disciples, then, just like the salt and the lamp, we can’t stay sitting on the shelf, apart from the food, or hiding in a corner, with an unlit wick. We have to take part and get involved, each according to the season of our lives. We have to shine God’s light before others, “that they may see your good deeds and glorify your heavenly Father.” Although it might feel intimidating, even overwhelming, to think of showing God’s light through our work, we can always turn to Jesus and ask Him to give us the courage and the confidence we need for the tasks He gives us.

Ponder:

Where is Jesus asking me to be salt and light? Am I hesitant or hopeful in my response to His call?

Pray:

Lord Jesus, help me to see where You are asking me to be salt and where You are calling me to be light. Help me to respond to You in the same way that Mary, Your mother, did with a heartfelt yes.
