Reflection by Lisa Connor
Today's Gospel: John 15:9-11
Jesus makes it sound so easy. He loves us like the Father loves Him. He offers us the gift of unlimited joy. If we stay and abide with Him, His joy is ours. It is limitless. Our joy will be made full. Do we even need to think about that?
But the thing is, we do think about it. When we get lazy, selfish, tired, frustrated or hurt, our choices can suffer. God gives us free will to choose. Unfortunately, sometimes we do not abide. Often, when we need Jesus’ love the most, we move further from Him.
Fortunately, Jesus does not abandon us. He continues to abide even when we move away. The offer stands. He will always abide, continuing to be available without fail or fading.
Life is difficult, and sometimes the world is unkind. It can seem easier, or necessary, to hold onto hardness and cease to abide. But why? Isn’t joy what we truly want? You have a choice. I hope you choose joy. Your heart will be full.
Ponder:
If we want joy, we must find a way to abide. Often, this starts with patience and self-control. We must think through choices and ask God for the grace to abide, even when our hearts are pulled toward darkness.
Pray:
Dear Lord, this world is not always easy. I am ever so grateful that You abide and stand by my side. Please help me to remember that Your joy is limitless. Help me seek and choose joy, always.
