Join us as we reflect, ponder, and pray together inspired by today's Gospel.

Today's Gospel: John 14:23-29

In the Last Supper discourses, Jesus is preparing His apostles and all who come after them for a life of faith without the benefit of His physical presence. He promises that the Holy Spirit will be an advocate to help us on our spiritual journey. In two weeks, we will celebrate the great feast of Pentecost, when the Holy Spirit came upon the apostles and gave them great spiritual gifts. The Holy Spirit transformed the apostles. They had been afraid of the Jewish authorities coming after them, but after the Holy Spirit was with them, they were full of courage and ready to preach the Word of God to all who would listen.

We, too, received the Holy Spirit when we were baptized and again in a special way when we were confirmed. The traditional gifts of the Holy Spirit are wisdom, understanding, counsel, fortitude, knowledge, piety, and fear of the Lord (CCC, 1831). The Holy Spirit is with us each and every day to help us as we parent, work, and go about our daily tasks. Who among us couldn’t use some divine help, especially wisdom and understanding, when it comes to parenting our children? All we need to do is ask. It can be as simple as praying, “Come, Holy Spirit,” or “Dear Holy Spirit, please be with me as I (fill in the blank).” We can also encourage our children to ask the Holy Spirit for help in making good decisions and for wisdom and knowledge as they tackle their schoolwork.

Jesus may have returned to the Father in heaven, but He did not leave us alone. The Holy Spirit is with us to aid and guide us.

Ponder:

Is there a particular area of your life where you could really use the Holy Spirit’s help?

Pray:

Come, Holy Spirit, please help me in all I think, say, and do today. Please give me the wisdom and understanding I need to be the mother I should be to my children.
