Today's Gospel: Mark 10:17-27
In today’s reading, we hear the familiar story of Jesus telling the rich man to sell his possessions and follow Jesus. The rich man leaves crestfallen because he had so many great possessions. As the story continues, we hear the familiar phrase:
“It is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for one who is rich to enter the Kingdom of God.”
The familiarity in this story has led me to overlook parts of these verses, but when preparing for this reflection, there is one part of the story that has never stuck out before and now is like a shining beacon. Right before Jesus tells the rich man to sell his possessions the Scripture reads,
“Jesus, looking at him, loved him . . . ”
Jesus knew the man would not likely sell his worldly goods and yet Jesus still loved him. Jesus knew that this man would likely not leave all of his things behind and follow Jesus and yet Jesus still loved him. Oh, what grace that man received that day, that Jesus knew who he was and still loved him. O, what grace we have, that Jesus knows who we are, including our shortcomings, and yet He still loves us too.
Today is the feast day of St. Augustine of Canterbury. St. Augustine often questioned himself. He wrote many letters filled with worries to Pope Gregory the Great and was warned by the pope that St. Augustine’s pride was getting in the way of trusting his decisions. St. Augustine persevered and learned to be satisfied even with his more humbler successes. Jesus knew St. Augustine’s shortcomings and yet He still loved him too.
O, what grace we have in knowing Jesus loves us.
Ponder:
What shortcomings do you have that you need to allow Jesus to come into, so that you can experience the fullness of His love?
Pray:
Jesus, thank You for the grace of Your love. Thank You for loving me and all of my shortcomings.
