Today's Gospel: John 16:20-23

Do you ever look at the lives of others who seem to have it easier and wish for what they have? Whether they appear to be having more fun, making more money, or enjoying more popularity, we may find ourselves comparing our lives to others’ and feeling resentful or envious. Our social media-driven society makes comparison with others especially tempting. While we try to live out our Christian values, it can seem that the rest of the world is having all the fun and that we are somehow missing out.

Today, Jesus reminds us that life in this world will not always be easy. The Cross is an ever-present reality that we cannot escape, but one that will bring us eternal joy in Heaven. As wives and mothers, carrying our crosses means that we often give up our own desires and comforts to fulfill our vocations to nurture and care for our families. The little sacrifices we make here and now for our children will help us to earn a glorious crown in Heaven.

St. Joan of Arc, whose feast day we celebrate today, made great sacrifices and endured terrible suffering at her execution, knowing that she would soon rejoice with the Lord in Heaven. She did not run away from hardship but remained faithful even to death. When we feel burdened by our sufferings in this life like Joan of Arc must have felt, we can remember Jesus’ words in today’s gospel reading:

“Amen, amen, I say to you, you will weep and mourn, while the world rejoices; you will grieve, but your grief will become joy.” John 16:20

Ponder:

Do I accept my hardships and sufferings cheerfully, knowing that my reward is in heaven with Jesus?

Pray:

Lord, You have promised that our sufferings will be turned to joy if we persevere in faithfulness to You. Please help us to carry our crosses willingly, trusting that we will be rewarded by You in heaven.
