Explore the depth of God's love and mercy as we reflect on the Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity. Learn to embrace compassion and share His grace.

Today's Gospel: John 3:16-18

Most toddlers seem to willingly embrace the “eye for an eye” adage in their play with others. It takes patience and perseverance, as parents, to teach them mercy and compassion. Jesus tells Nicodemus, a man who would understand “an eye for an eye” mentality as a just and righteous law, that God gave His Son to the world to save the world, not to condemn it. We tend to fall into one of two camps: we either struggle to believe in God’s love and mercy for us, believing that we justly deserve nothing good in life, or we tend towards presumption—God is loving and merciful, and I haven’t really done much very wrong in my life. Maybe deep down, I may even struggle to believe that I need a Savior.

If we’re able to approach our lives and world honestly and humbly, we must acknowledge that we have a tendency towards disorder and selfishness and cannot save ourselves or the world. Every tiny sin I commit is against God’s plan for my life and the world. If we’re able to sit with reality, we see darkness, pain, and sin in ourselves and in the world. We see hunger and an untold number of injustices. We are a world in need of saving, and only Jesus has saved it.

God doesn’t come into our world to condemn it, though our actions are worthy of condemnation. God comes in love and mercy to suffer tremendously for our hearts. These verses are one of the most well-known in the whole Bible because they speak of God’s incredible love for each one of us.

Ponder:

Do I know I need God's love and mercy, or do I presume upon His love and mercy for me?

Pray:

Lord, help me to know how much You love me. Help me to share with others about how much You love and care for them.

Pray Together:

As a family, decide on a way you can share with others about how much God loves them, and how merciful He is.
