Today's Gospel: John 16:19-23
In today’s Gospel reading, after Jesus had just told His disciples plainly that He will soon leave them and send the Advocate (Holy Spirit) to reveal God’s will to them more completely, we see the disciples respond with faith and understanding.
“Now we realize that you know everything and that you do not need to have anyone question you. Because of this we believe that you came from God.” John 17:30
Jesus, our Lord and greatest teacher, knows very well the human nature of us, His students. Just as a math teacher wouldn’t review differential equations before first ensuring his pupils understand that 2+2=4, Jesus knows that to understand the fullness of His glory, we must first say yes to walking with Him. His ways of revealing Himself to us might not always make sense in the moment, but we must be like the disciples who followed Him faithfully, listening to and learning from all His parables and early lessons. In times of confusion, when things look hazy and unsure, trust that He is preparing to reveal Himself to you in a new way, as long as you remain with Him.
“I have told you this so that you might have peace in me. In the world you will have trouble, but take courage, I have conquered the world.” John 17:33
Today, we celebrate the feast of Saints Marcellinus, a priest, and Peter, an exorcist, both martyrs of the early Church. While not much is known about their lives, in their final days before their execution, they took the opportunity to evangelize to their jailer, who then converted along with his family. Praise God for their great faith! May we share in that same peace, knowing that Christ has already conquered the world. Saints Marcellinus and Peter, pray for us.
Ponder:
Has there been a time when you felt unsure where God was leading you?
Pray:
Jesus, thank You for showing me the way and pacing my journey with You. Help me to remain ever close to You, especially in times when You are preparing my mind and heart. Give me the grace to walk with You in patience and to trust that You will never lead me astray.
