Today's Gospel: John 17:1-11a

Today is the anniversary of the death of Father Patrick Peyton, C.S.C., the founder of the ministry I am blessed to work for, Family Rosary USA. Known as the "Rosary Priest," with the message, "That the family that prays together stays together," Father Peyton worked tirelessly to encourage families to come together daily to pray. Jesus speaks in this Gospel of knowing God. The way to know the Father is through the Son, and we have a relationship with Him through prayer!

Two specific verses in today's Gospel passage remind me of Venerable Patrick Peyton and his dedication to promoting family prayer, especially the Rosary. First, the Lord's words:

"I glorified you on earth by accomplishing the work that you gave me to do."

As a young seminarian, Patrick Peyton lay suffering from advanced tuberculosis. The doctors offered two options for treatment—risky surgery or prayer. When miraculously healed through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Father Pat dedicated the remainder of his life to promoting the family Rosary. He spoke to literally millions at Rosary Crusades across the globe, genuinely living Jesus' words to glorify the Father and accomplish the work given him.

The second verse, "I pray for them," sums up Father Peyton's mission and mindset. He was a man of great prayer, forever a witness to others. I love the story a priest who knew Father Peyton shared with me about the night, as a young seminarian, he had the opportunity to drive Father Pat to the airport. He was so excited to have this holy man all to himself and couldn't wait to ask him a million questions. Seconds after their seatbelts locked, he heard a familiar Irish brogue begin, "I believe in God, the Father Almighty . . ." Honestly, I think that single act spoke volumes!

Ponder:

How does the life of Venerable Patrick Peyton exemplify the power of prayer, especially the Rosary, and its ability to transform individuals and families, reflecting the message of Jesus in today’s Gospel?

Pray:

Raising my eyes to heaven, as Jesus did, I pray to glorify God in all I do, think, and say. I pray to reveal Your name to all and be a witness like Venerable Patrick Peyton to the power of prayer, especially when connected with Your most glorious mother, Mary!
