Today's Gospel: Mark 12:18-27

Questions, anyone? People have questions, and Jesus has answers. He wrote the book! No matter how many times you read the Bible, questions may arise. It even happened in the time of Jesus.

The Sadducees asked Jesus regarding a woman who had been married seven times, “At the resurrection when they arise whose wife will she be?” (Mark 12:23)

Jesus exhorts them, “Are you not misled because you do not know the Scriptures or the power of God?” (Mark 12:24) Jesus added,

“He is not God of the dead but of the living. You are greatly misled.” Mark 12:27

God’s ways are not our ways. Learning God’s Word is like learning another language. Living His Word is a work of grace.

In this same way, our babies are learning our language. As moms, we train them as to what to say and what to do. At first, the babies just mimic what they see and hear. Our fifteenth grandbaby recently came to see us, displaying a new skill. As a six-month-old, she can now clap on command. I do not think she has a clue about what she is doing, but she will keep on learning until she has mastered the English language.

Our life as Catholics is much the same. Jesus teaches us another language. We are learning what to say and what to do. As we meet Jesus in prayer, receive the sacraments, and look to the saints, we grow into the likeness of Christ.

St. Boniface, whose feast day we celebrate today, is a great example of one who embraced the faith. His Christian orthodoxy and fidelity to the pope are two of his outstanding virtues. He could clearly see that paganism had crept into churches. God called him to help bring reform, which he accomplished. I guess you could say that he learned the authentic language of the Faith well.

Teach the authentic language of the Faith to your children until they are fluent. Let them ask questions because Jesus has the answers.

Ponder:

Do you have questions about your faith? Where do you go for the answers?

Pray:

Dear Jesus, help me to pass the faith down to my children in word and in deed. May they know that everyone has questions and Jesus always has the answers.
