Today's Gospel: Mark 12:13-17

Don’t you love how Jesus doesn’t fall for the traps that His enemies place before Him again and again? He doesn’t play games, but He is aware that others do. So, He gives them an answer that is truthful yet transcends the issue they are concerned with.

Politics in Israel during Jesus’s life was complicated. The reality of Roman occupation and how it affected Jewish worship created a tense and divisive situation with rival groups vying for power and control. But Jesus didn’t need to grab power. He is all-powerful. He didn’t need to take control because He always was and always will be in control.

In the politically divisive times in which we live, we can sometimes fall into the trap of worrying more about the political power players than the One Who is the most powerful. Jesus doesn’t care about Roman coins and taxes. He doesn’t care whose face is on the British pound or what tax relief bill is in the House or Senate. He cares about what’s in our hearts and souls. In the end, that’s all that will remain.

We’re called to elevate our minds and hearts to see the world and ourselves the way that God sees and to transcend the daily details of life while still living in this world and building up the Kingdom of God on earth to the best of our ability. We’re called to be in the world but not of the world. Answering this call is definitely a challenge. And, for most of us, it will be a lifelong journey of growing in faith and trust in God’s plan. But, with God’s help, we can begin to see the world as He sees it and avoid the traps that try to distract us from what’s really important.

Ponder:

Do I fall for the traps of this world that try to distract me from what’s really important? How can I remind myself to see myself, others, and the world the way God sees it?

Pray:

Lord Jesus, I thank You and praise You for Your great wisdom. Share that wisdom with me as I go about my day today. Help me to avoid any traps that are meant to distract me from what is really important.
