Today's Gospel: John 19:31-37
I have seen the movie The Passion of the Christ only once --in 2022, eighteen years after its release. Many friends recommended the film, but I avoided it because I couldn’t imagine watching Jesus tortured and killed. And it was just as awful to watch the depiction of the scourging and crucifixion as I imagined it would be. As a mother, my heart broke into pieces watching Mary witness what was happening to her son, knowing she could not stop it.
I will likely never watch the movie again, but I walked away that night red-faced and with swollen eyes, loving Jesus even more. Because through all the blood and violence, it was love on that screen. Sacrificing one’s self for another-- the highest form of love.
I pray each time we gaze at the crucifix it softens our hearts and that we grow incrementally more in love with Jesus. And I pray the next time we are before Jesus at Adoration, we allow ourselves to be loved by Him. Growing in love will change hearts and convert us to live our faith. Love can and does change the world.
Ponder:
How can we love God incrementally more this week? How can we allow ourselves to be loved in return?
Pray:
Heart of Jesus, broken for our sins, have mercy on us. Heart of Jesus, pierced by a lance, have mercy on us.
