Discover how to instill the Beatitudes in your family through modeling, prayer, and grace, while reflecting on the joys and challenges of parenthood.

Today's Gospel: Matthew 5:1-12

It is so appropriate that this Gospel reflection comes on my only child’s birthday since ever since my daughter was born, I wanted to instill in her the Beatitudes. They are a lovely way to approach life, focusing on the “do's” rather than the “don’ts.”

As parents, we want our children to be comforted when they mourn and to be shown mercy when they fall short of all God wants for them. We wish for them that poverty of spirit which will help gain them the kingdom of heaven.

But living out the Beatitudes is hard work. It can be daunting to be meek—especially when you are a hungry three-year-old whose baby brother has just stolen his toy car. It can seem next to impossible to be clean of heart when you are a teenager struggling with your hormones. The Beatitudes are definitely not for the faint of heart.

Perhaps the best way to teach our children the Beatitudes is to model them ourselves. To be peacemakers in the midst of neighborhood strife. To be righteous when everyone else seems to be embracing sinful pursuits.

We cannot accomplish these positive attitudes and good deeds under our own power. If we try, we will soon falter. Rather, we need to lean on the One who powers us everyday—the Lord of the universe.

We need God’s grace to carry us through the rough patches. We can obtain it through prayer, frequent reception of the Sacraments (particularly the Holy Eucharist and Reconciliation), and through regular reading of the Scriptures. The more we are in tune with our Maker, the more we can share with our children, who desperately need our guidance in addition to our love.

We have every reason to rejoice, because God has opened up heaven to us!

Ponder:

What is the hardest beatitude for you to live out in your daily life?

Pray:

Most merciful God, You show us the path to eternal happiness through the Beatitudes. Please shower Your grace upon us, that we will be able to live out these principles well.

Pray Together:

As a family, choose one Beatitude to live out this week.
