Reflection by Leslie Lynch
Today's Gospel: John 16:12-15
Jesus said to His disciples:
“I have much more to tell you, but you cannot bear it now.”
Today is Holy Trinity Sunday. In this Gospel, Jesus introduces the disciples to the Holy Spirit. The disciples haven’t even gotten their minds around Jesus’s divinity, His oneness with God the Father. No wonder Jesus says they cannot bear all He has to tell them!
Even with the benefit of hindsight and the Bible and all that our Church teaches us, we cannot bear all He has for us! It’s like expecting a kindergartener to understand quantum physics.
Sometimes I think that if God allowed me to feel the fullness of His love for even a nanosecond, I might die from the glory of it. Yet is this not what we seek? To be one with God, our Creator; Jesus, our Lord; and the Holy Spirit, Who draws us closer to God?
Yet God gives us tiny glimpses into His love.
The almost-not-there softness of a newborn’s skin—
The glory of a sunset or the Milky Way or an eclipse—
Flowers, even if they are disguised as weeds—
The Eucharist—
We’ll never understand the mystery of the Holy Trinity this side of heaven, and Jesus no longer walks among us, but the Holy Spirit is here. Today, in every breath we take.
Ponder:
How does God show Himself to me each day? How can the Holy Spirit deepen my relationship with God?
Pray:
Dearest Jesus, my Lord and my God, bring me closer to You and the Father through the fire of the Holy Spirit’s love.
